Legionella Testing
Legionella bacteria are relatively easy to control below levels that would present a risk to health. Regulations and guidance notes are in place to support the fight against the disease. Countries differ slightly in their approach to the legionella threat, with some differences in legislation from country to country, or even within the states. The general consensus, however, is one based upon control and suppression of aerobic bacteria with confirmation by routine testing, as opposed to complete eradication.
If proper control measures are implemented following a risk assessment, such as regular addition of suitable biocides, monthly temperature checks, thermo-shock treatment, pH control and TVC screening, the legionella “risk” is kept in control. Legionella bacteria can colonise manufactured water systems and can be found in cooling tower systems, hot and cold-water systems and other plants which use or store water. To reduce the possibility of creating conditions in which the risk from exposure to legionella bacteria is increased, it is important to control the risk by introducing measures that:
(a) Do not allow the proliferation of the organisms in the water systems;
(b) Reduce, as far as reasonably practicable, exposure to water droplets and aerosol
